NYC hair stylist, styles Wigs for Jewish orthodox clients.

September 28th, 2015|

Many New York women will admit to paying in excess of $300 for a good haircut. Especially on Manhattan’s glossy Upper East Side, where a polished appearance is de rigueur.
But several hairdressers in the exclusive locale have told how a growing number of clients are paying up to $1,600 on maintaining not their own hair, but their wigs.
According to orthodox Jewish law, a married woman must wear a wig, or, ‘sheitel’ for modesty, as only her husband is allowed to see her hair.

Indulgence: Linda's wig-maintenance sessions with Arsen Gurgov at the Louis Licari salon on Fifth Avenue, cost $325 - some women spend up to $1,600

Indulgence: Linda’s wig-maintenance sessions with Arsen Gurgov at the Louis Licari salon on Fifth Avenue, cost $325 – some women spend up to $1,600

But more and more are eschewing specialist Brooklyn salons in favour of high-end salons frequented by A-listers and royalty.
One such woman, Linda, who spends $325 on a cut with Arsen Gurgov at the Louis Licari salon on Fifth Avenue, insists the indulgence is worth every penny.
The home care nurse, 29, told the New York Post: ‘It’s my wig. I can’t just trust any woman with it. I can’t afford to get it wrong.

I don’t think I’m extravagant in my day-to-day life, but if people consider my sheitel maintenance extravagant, so be it. My wig is not something I would try to save money on.

Indeed, a sheitel is an investment. Typically purchased by a husband’s family for the first time, they retail for upwards of $500. The best quality wigs, usually made from European hair, can cost in excess of $6,000.
Linda, who has had five hairpieces since marrying nine years ago, added: ‘It’s definitely more expensive, but it’s worth it.’

‘If people consider my sheitel maintenance extravagant, so be it. My wig is not something I’d try to save money on’

Mr Gurgov says demand for his services from orthodox Jewish clients has been particularly high of late, due to Rosh Hashanah, which begins today.
“Everyone does their hair before Rosh Hashanah,’ he said. ‘Even if they neglect their hair all year, this is the time.”
At celebrity stylist Orlando Pita’s trendy Meatpacking District salon, Orlo, around 25 per cent of the clientele are orthodox Jewish women, writer Doree Lewak reports.

But a wig-maintenance session with the famed cutter comes at an extortionate $1,600 – twice the price of his regular haircuts.
An employee at the salon told her: ‘These women don’t want to admit they’re spending this much on a haircut.’
But stylist Mark Garrison, who says increasing numbers of orthodox Jewish women are paying in excess of $1,000 for two-to-three-hour sessions at his Upper East Side salon, admits the pressure to get a wig cut right is higher than with regular hair.

I’ve always wanted to take my time to get it right,’ he said. ‘It doesn’t grow back. You don’t have margin for error here. You don’t just bang these things out.”

The Blow Out King – Arsen Gurgov

September 24th, 2015|

I want to begin this by saying that I actually cannot remember if I brushed my hair or not this morning.

But I guess I would remember if I spent $7,000 a year on blow-outs, which apparently some women are doing?

It’s okay! It’s just because women think about “their hair like men think about sex.” At least they do according to blow-out king Arsen Gurgov. Apparently:

” Blow-dry addicts fret so much about Gurgov’s physical and mental state that they call the salon in advance to monitor his mood and general well-being. “ ‘He seemed a little tired yesterday. Is he OK today?’ Or, ‘He seemed to be blinking a lot, is he up for this?’ ” laughs Gurgov, “as if I were a brain surgeon performing a life-saving operation on the pope! ”

Oh, my God, I think this is the best thing I have ever heard. This is all I want. I want people making frantic phone calls to insure I am not a little tired. You go, Gurgov. Your client base sounds out of their minds, but I think you could form a weird little religion, like they did in The Master. I still haven’t seen The Master, but I reckon it’s something of a how-to guide for people like you.

Look. Here is a secret. If you want straight, manageable hair, get it Japanese straightened. You’ll have to deep condition you hair every other week or so, because the treatment is drying, and you have to have it retouched every six months, but it only costs $350, which up until now I thought was kind of extravagant, but I now see is a total bargain. Here. If you are in New York I really recommend the legendary Louis Licari salon in Manhattan, where Arsen Gurgov resides.

Blow Dry lessons from Arsen Gurgov the NYC Hairstylist for Husbands

September 8th, 2015|

Most women, if they can’t successfully wield a dryer and a brush simultaneously, turn to trusted professionals for their blow-drys, paying upwards of $35 a time.
But one top New York salon believes that there is another alternative: the husband.
The Louis Licari Salon is offering blow-drying classes that teach men how to style their wives’ hair, ABC News reports.

The top New York salon teaching HUSBANDS how to master the perfect blow-dry

My husband the hairstylist: Stylist Arsen Gurgov at the Louis Licari Salon in New York is offering classes that teach men how to blow-dry their wives’ hair

Six two-hour classes with head stylist Arsen Gurgov cost $2,400 – and some couples are embracing the idea as a way to bond and spend time with one another.

‘Clients would say, “Why can’t my husband be more like you?”‘ Mr Gurgov, 32, told the New York Post.

‘He’ll save money, she’ll get attention; it’s sensual. It’s like cooking class together – except the husband is blow-drying for the wife. It’s date night with the hubby.’

Jeff Langberg, an investment banker, is among the husbands taking part in the classes.

Bonding experience: Investment banker Jeff Langberg and his wife Kelly are among the couples to have splashed out $2,400 for the series of six classes

Explaining the appeal, he said: ‘It’s just doing stuff together. It’s another activity.’

He admits that the hardest part is making sure he doesn’t burn wife Kelly with the dryer’s heat.

Mr Gurgov says the trick to a good blow-dry is co-ordination: wielding a brush in one hand and a 2,000-watt machine in another.

‘Once they have the rhythm of using the brush and the blow-dryer it’s easy,’ he says.

Rhythm: Mr Gurgov says the trick to a good blow-dry is co-ordination – wielding a brush in one hand and a 2,000-watt machine in another

While the $2,400 fee for the six classes seems steep, it would seem that training one’s husband remains the cost-effective option.

On the basis that a typical blowout costs $35 (though one with Mr Gurgov costs $95), and some women go as often as three times a week, ABC News calculates that with tax and tip, one would spend $6,000 a year.

Which makes the husband option a relative bargain.

NYC hairstylist’s Arsen Gurgovs version of Chignon Style.

September 4th, 2015|

But you don’t need to rush from work to a salon. The News surveyed some of the top stylists in town to create five easy looks you can pull off in the office before you punch out to the punch bowl.

And luckily, creating a festive style is best with “second day” hair, because it holds its shape and doesn’t just slip through your fingers.

So experiment, have fun, and look your best out there:

The New Chignon style

NYC Hairstylist : Arsen Gurgov at Louis Licari, 693 Fifth Ave.

  1. Use a quarter-size drop of Moroccanoil Medium Styling Gel on the ends of the hair, and run it through with your fingers.
  2. Using a Mason Pearson brush (or any paddle brush with bristles), comb the hair at the crown of the head backwards to create lift.
  3. Create waves throughout the hair with a 1-inch curling iron on 1-inch sections.
  4. Create a dramatic side part (roughly at the outer end of one eyebrow), and use a clear rubber band to make a low ponytail. But keep a 1-inch section of the hair near the hairline loose, from ear to ear.
  5. Using small strands from the ponytail, create miniature loose buns, securing each with a bobby pin. Curl the front section and leave it loose for a wispy effect.
  6. Finish off with KMS Maximum Hold Spray.

Celebrity Hairstylist Arsen Gurgov turns up the heat to transform hair.

September 4th, 2015|

Hot scissors are the coolest new trend in hair — and only one man makes the cut.

At the famous 5th Ave. salon Louis Licari, hairstylist Arsen Gurgov has discovered a secret weapon in the form of electric scissors that heat up to 310 degrees.

The burning blades cook split ends into submission, according to Gurgov.

Gurgov’s burning blades cook split ends into submission.

“With conventional scissors, the cuticle is still open,” says the stylist, who’s been working for Louis Licari for 15 years. “So a few months later, you still get those split ends. With these, the heat seals the ends, so ultimately you get no split ends.”

Gurgov says the technique lets his clients grow their hair out without witnessing their manes transform into wispy, lifeless strands — resulting in more time between appointments and hair that is less prone to breakage.

Emmy Rossum (l.) and Hoda Kotb are two of Arsen Gurgov’s satisfied customers.

“Once you have split ends, you’re kind of forced to cut your hair again,” says Gurgov, whose salon counts boldfacers Emmy Rossum, Susan Sarandon, Julianne Moore, Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford of the NBC TODAY Show, among its regulars. “And most people want to keep it long.”

But that luxury — and that heat — doesn’t come cheap. Hot scissor cuts cost $350 (The salon charges $145 for regular cuts).

Vivian Afonso before and after she has her hair cut with the hot scissor haircut technique by master stylist Arsen Gurgov at Louis Licari Salon in midtown Manhattan.

Finding the heated wasn’t cut and dry: Gurgov spent a month researching new developments in the hair tool industry based on a tip from a stylist pal before he discovered a way to deliver a cut above.

“They’re German-made scissors,” Gurgov says of his slim and lightweight blades, which are wired to a small black box he uses to adjust the temperature. “I knew about people in Germany who were actually able to get these scissors for a while, and I just couldn’t get them. I went to Moscow, to England, and I found a guy who was able to access the Germans.”

arsen gurgov hair stylist nyc  source : PEARL GABEL/NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Hairstylist Arsen Gurgov’s hot scissor cuts cost $350. Regular cuts go for $145.

The scissors heat up like a curling iron — there’s no fire, no ash, and no sizzling if used correctly. There’s also no scent of scorched hair.

The more damaged the locks, the higher the temperature: Those with luscious locks only need the scissors heated to 230 degrees, but Gurgov will crank it up to the full 310 when needed.

Gurgov says he’s gotten excellent feedback from his regular clients — and Gramercy Park resident Ronnie Oppenheim told us she wasn’t afraid of getting burned. In fact, she didn’t even notice the heat.

“I wasn’t quite sure what was going on,” says Oppenheim, 66. “Because he didn’t mention it to me. . . . I saw that he paid more attention to the details of the hair when he was cutting.”
