Ask for the Dry Cut and Here is Why … Arsen Gurgov NYC Hairstylist

February 12th, 2016|

If you thought that there was some universal rule that a haircut must involve the cutting of wet hair, think again. In fact, taking scissors to dry hair has never been more popular. That’s because for certain hair types and styles, getting snipped when your hair is completely dry can actually improve the results—as well as improve the condition of your hair too. The following six reasons just might turn you into a dry cut convert too.

dry hair-cut- Arsen Gurgov NYC Hairstylist

1) Dry cutting is a friend to people with curly and wavy hair.

Anyone with temperamental ringlets or waves knows that exactly where you slice and dice can make a big difference in whether you like the end result – and it can be harder to tell where the curls are going to lie when your hair is soaking wet, says renowned stylist and salon owner Paul Labrecque. Cutting while the curls are doing their thing means your stylist can pick and choose where to cut so that they lie atop one another just right.

2) It can get you in and out of the salon faster.

Ever notice how, after you have a traditional, wet hair cut and your stylist has dried your hair she often has to go back over it again with the scissors, trimming here and there? Doing it dry to begin with eliminates most of this second-round work, says stylist Vanessa Ungaro, co-owner of the salon Lauren + Vanessa in New York City, where Ungaro exclusively uses the dry cutting method.

3) It can be gentler on fragile, thinning hair.

Wet hair is more fragile and elastic (especially if over processed or fine), and can be prone to snapping while it’s being combed over and over during a wet cut, says Ungaro. You’re likely to shed fewer strands during the whole process if you have a dry cut, notes Labrecque, which is important for people with thinning hair or who are concerned about breakage.

4) There may be fewer surprises.

Because hair is so stretchy when wet, it looks much longer, and this is especially true for people with very curly hair, says Labrecque. Cutting the hair when it’s already dry allows the stylist to trim just the right amount off – and eliminates the shock factor that can come right after a cut, when it can bounce up way more than anyone expected. What you see is what you get when you cut it dry, and that can cut down on any miscommunication between client and stylist, says Ungaro.

5) It can be more precise.

When you dry cut you really get to see the movement of the hair, where most of the weight is and how much really needs to be cut off, says Ungaro, making it an ideal choice for fine or thin hair as well.  One more bonus: You can see split ends more clearly when the hair is dry!

6) It’s 100% tailored to you.

When hair is cut wet, many stylists are just following a formula and doing the movements that they were taught in school, says Ungaro. “But when you cut dry, you are creating a completely individual, custom haircut especially for the client sitting in your chair,” says Ungaro. “I cut by eye and create movement within the hair so no matter which way the wind moves it your hair will look amazing and fall into place.”

Tips on keeping your hair healthy in this winter. Hairstylist NYC | Hair Guru NYC

January 27th, 2016|

Winter is here and so is the cold air and strong winds that damage and hurt your beautiful hair. Here are some tips on keeping your hair healthy, strong and growing during these long cold months.

Stop Washing. Limit washing your hair 3 times a week max and never leave your house with wet hair. When your hair is wet, it is very vulnerable to damage. When mixed with the cold air, it leads to dry, brittle hair full of flyaways. When you do wash, use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner like the ones found in our salon. Sulfate-based products strip your hair’s natural oils.

Conditioning Treatment. Just like your skin, your hair needs a weekly mask especially during the winter months. The dry heat in your house, office and at public places (restaurants, malls, theaters) mixed with the cold air outside strips your hair’s moisture. Using a deep conditioning treatment weekly will help replenish the moisture, leaving your hair shiny and frizz-free.

Eliminate the Heat. With the dry heat pumping everything, try to limit using heat products on days you wash your hair. Heat causes your hair cuticle to split open, which creates frizz and flyaways.

Sleep with a Scrunchy. It might not be the most fashionable look, but if you sleep with your hair up use a scrunchy or pins over a tight elastic band. The scrunchy is actually less damaging on your hair since it doesn’t pull on your strands. It also won’t leave any unwanted creases or dents making morning styling a breeze.

Get A Humidifier. Winter is the most damaging to your hair because of the heat that’s pumping everywhere. Frizz is your hair telling you that it’s dehydrated and lacking moisture. A humidifier will add moisture to the air which will help your hair and skin from feeling dry.

What your hair maybe saying about your Health. | Hairstylist NYC|

January 20th, 2016|

Most of us view our hair as separate from the rest of our body, but like our nails, hair is an extension (pun intended) of our body that can give us clues as to our overall health. Herein, four hair signs that something may be amiss.

If you once had thick, lustrous hair that turned fine and limp, first look to see what you’ve been doing to your hair lately. Have you been swimming a lot in chlorinated water? Did you dye your hair recently? These things, among others, can cause your hair to lose its luster. But limp, dry hair may also be a sign of hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, in which your thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough hormones, causing your metabolism to slow down. Other signs of hypothyroidism can be sudden weight gain, unexplained fatigue, and being cold all the time. If you suspect hypothyroidism to be the culprit, talk to your doctor about testing your thyroid levels. If you do have an underactive thyroid, you can often take medication to supplement your hormone levels. Hairstylist NYC arsen gurgov.

A lot of people have dandruff that is easily treated with an anti-dandruff shampoo, but if your dandruff is starting to turn into thick scaly patches, it could be a sign that you have psoriasis, an autoimmune disease in which the skin goes into overdrive, speeding up the process of skin cell turnover. If you have another autoimmune disease, such as multiple sclerosis or Crohn’s disease, it ups the chance that you’ll get psoriasis, so be especially wary if you have another autoimmune condition.

The average person loses about 100 hairs a day (by the looks of my hairbrush at the end of a day, I’d say my average is closer to two or three hundred). This hair loss is normal and doesn’t make your hair feel any thinner. But if your hair starts to feel markedly thinner or your hair starts to come out in clumps, it may a sign that something is up (or in this case, out). Sometimes hair loss can be attributed to a recent stressor, such as a divorce or job loss. In other cases, hair loss can also be another sign of hypothyroidism or a sign of a hormonal imbalance relating to PCOS, polycystic ovarian syndrome. Still, there are also a few medications, including some birth control pills and antidepressants, which can cause hair loss as a side effect.

Yes, hair loss can be related to several things, so in this case, it’s best to talk to your doctor about all your symptoms. Also, if you suspect your meds to be the culprit, talk to your doc about an alternative before stopping your medication altogether.

Finally, another sign of a more serious problem could be dry, brittle hair that breaks easily. Your hair is made up a protein called keratin, and if you’re not getting enough protein in your diet, it could weaken your hair. This could also be another telltale sign of a thyroid issue, so be sure to check with your doc if this is the case.

Celebrity Hair Stylist NYC, Arsen Gurgov, Shares How To Get Holiday Hair

November 11th, 2015|

Great article from my friends at  KDHamptons from a few years back. Thank you so much!

When I zip into the city for a big event, I leave my tresses in the hands of celebrity hair stylist Arsen Gurgov of Louis Licari salon.

In terms of beauty, nothing can beat a great hair day, except maybe a great hair night! KDH loves to leave my hair in the care of Arsen Gurgov at the Louis Licari salon when I have a fancy party to attend.  Arsen’s digits are on speed dial for Manhattan party mavens who love to pair sexy, soft waves with a drop-dead dress.  Even better, Arsen always manages to make you smile, relax and have fun even when you are running late, it’s raining in the city, there are no cabs to be found, and you still haven’t picked up your dress from the tailor! Learn more about our mane man here:

Arsen Gurgov, a master stylist at the renowned Louis Licari salon on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, is the go-to expert for chic, sexy, lustrous hair. Having emigrated from Uzbekistan in his teens, Gurgov landed a coveted assistant’s position at Louis Licari at the age of 17. In less than a decade he built a remarkable career, clearly establishing himself as a leading hairstylist. Celebrated for weekly TV segments in which he deftly transforms outdated, lifeless hair with chic new cuts, Gurgov has also developed a signature, personalized approach to the popular keratin hair-smoothing treatments.

A sought-after trendsetter, Gurgov’s work is regularly featured in the media, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the New York Post; fashion and beauty magazines Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Self, W, Glamour, and InStyle; TV shows including Today, The View, Good Morning America, and New York Live; and a variety of films directed by Spike Lee, Sidney Lumet, and Todd Solondz.

KDH: Who is your favorite celeb or model you have worked with and why?
AG: I’ve had the pleasure to work with many celebrities, but one of the first was actress Ellen Barkin. She was in the movie Palindromes, and I styled her hair every day. It was an interesting experience because it was away from the salon world and I had to quickly adapt my techniques to what the director wanted. Ellen is beautiful, smart, and outspoken—in the time I spent with her I learned to listen. I always style hair in the way I know is right for the client; but it’s important to first pay attention to her needs and then to communicate what I plan to do.

KDH: Why are women so obsessed with our hair?
AG: Your hair is an essential part of your signature style—it’s even more important than what you are wearing. Sometimes it takes some time and effort to have it look good, but it’s always worth it.

KDH: Is it a myth that men prefer long hair?
AG: Men prefer women who are confident about their style and appearance—whether your hair is long or short, all that matters is that you own your look.

I loved the mermaid hair that Arsen gave me recently for the Pedro Almodovar event at MoMA, so I asked him to share his how-to’s with KDHamptons readers:

KDHamptons: What do you think is the look for sexy holiday hair?
Arsen Gurgov: For sexy holiday hair, you can’t go wrong with a wavy look, as long as it’s polished and not too wild or messy. The waves can be either tight or loose, whichever you prefer, but be sure to use a texturizing product to add luster before you style.

KDH: Which products do we need to get this look?
AG: I prefer to use Kevin Murphy Anti Gravity oil-free volumizer to add texture and to control the curl; the more you use, the more texture it will add.

KDH: Ok so how can we create this look at home?

-Before styling, rub Kevin Murphy’s volumizing cream through your hair from the roots to the ends—it’s best to apply it on soaking-wet hair.
– Air-dry or blow-dry your hair depending on your hair texture and the amount of frizz you have.
-When your hair is dry, take a section of hair, spritz with styling spray, and wrap it around a one-inch-wide curling iron (make sure you include the ends of your hair), wrapping it away from your face. Continue with small sections, being careful to create symmetrical curls.
-Finish with a smoothing cream and a light mist of hairspray.

Hair Myths by Celebrity Hair Stylist Arsen Gurgov

November 2nd, 2015|

By Arsen Gurgov

At least ten people a day come into the salon me asking a million questions about their hair. Whether it’s using some oil that makes your hair grow or
how often you should get your hair cut, everyone has an opinion. So let’s debunk some of these rumors.

Cutting your hair every six weeks – MYTH!
If you rock a short style then you may need to give it more attention, but depending who gave you the cut you can stretch your next appointment to
about 8-12 weeks.

arsen 1

You should wash your hair everyday – MYTH!
You most definitely should NOT be washing your hair every day! Something people don’t know is shampoo is not meant for your hair, but rather for
your scalp. If you are one of those people who feels the NEED to wash their hair everyday here’s a tip: shampoo when the conditioner is already in your
hair! To keep your hair looking healthy and not tired and dry, only wash your hair three or four times a week!

arsen 2 arsen 3

Just washed hair is best for styling – MYTH!
When it comes to styling your hair, blow-drying it before hand can make all the difference. It is best to pre-dry the hair by blow drying to the point right
before it would start to frizz. That way you get the best result you can when styling.

arsen 4

Some other tips to keep your hair looking the best it can!
• A way to keep your hairline looking good when it gets oily. Just shampoo your hairline to keep it looking thick and full of bounce.
• The best treatment for split ends is not putting a product in it, but rather just cut them!
• Dry shampoo may make it look less oily, but it actually makes it look thinner.
These are just some simple ways to add a little more life back into your hair!

Want Me To Come in at 4 am…SURE!

October 22nd, 2015|

By Arsen Gurgov

Let’s get one thing straight I am not a morning person! But when my dear friend J.J.
Keras called me last night I couldn’t resist an early morning blow out. I rolled out of bed at
5:30, was in the salon but 6:45, and J.J. who just arrived from Memphis, was in my chair by 7.
She came to me to get camera ready for a segment on pumpkin facials on Good Day New York
with Rosanna Scotto. For this early morning appearance, we gave her a full bodied blow out, to
have her looking fresh and ready. I will say there is not much more anyone can do to make her
more gorgeous than she already is, truly a hair stylist’s dream!

I loved making her feel special, and giving her that extra boost the confidence.. Having
J.J. come in early and helping her primp for the big show, not only gave her some time to relax
before, but also mentally prepare! And just a few hours later she was back in my chair getting a
quick trim before she headed home!

arsens blog 1arsens blog 2

Above you can see the whole process! I love this look, and it’s perfect for any woman
with loads of volume and body! Even though it was an early morning I’m so glad that I was able
to help transform her for her time in the spot light! Now that I think about it my wife and I are
going to have to try that pumpkin facial!

Thanks for reading and following me!

There’s Nothing Like A Good Hair Day. With the NYC Hair Guru Arsen Gurgov.

October 20th, 2015|

Everyone is bound to have bad day every once and a while. Whether someone took your cab or you trip and fall in Central Park, the question is how do you turn that day around? Treat yourself! Nothing can lift your spirits more than a little pampering. When I know someone has had a bad day, I love making them feel special with the latest hair trend. You would be surprised how casual beach waves or something straight and sleek can really change ones attitude.

For example, my dear friend Amy Rosenblum had a nasty spill in Central Park two weeks ago where she fractured her knee cap. A week later she found herself getting the royal treatment in my chair, leg brace and all. I set her up with some effortless beach waves, that perked her day right up, no one even noticed her brace after that. She is pictured below looking and feeling better than ever.

                                                                           I feel like a princess 🙂

One’s appearance can make all the difference in how they approach the day. And it doesn’t even need to be a bad day to have an excuse to do something special for yourself.

Coming in early and spending a little time getting beautified in my chair can make that day the best ever. In my opinion it’s important to treat yourself, and to look your best! A good hair day can make all the difference.

NYC hair stylist, styles Wigs for Jewish orthodox clients.

September 28th, 2015|

Many New York women will admit to paying in excess of $300 for a good haircut. Especially on Manhattan’s glossy Upper East Side, where a polished appearance is de rigueur.
But several hairdressers in the exclusive locale have told how a growing number of clients are paying up to $1,600 on maintaining not their own hair, but their wigs.
According to orthodox Jewish law, a married woman must wear a wig, or, ‘sheitel’ for modesty, as only her husband is allowed to see her hair.

Indulgence: Linda's wig-maintenance sessions with Arsen Gurgov at the Louis Licari salon on Fifth Avenue, cost $325 - some women spend up to $1,600

Indulgence: Linda’s wig-maintenance sessions with Arsen Gurgov at the Louis Licari salon on Fifth Avenue, cost $325 – some women spend up to $1,600

But more and more are eschewing specialist Brooklyn salons in favour of high-end salons frequented by A-listers and royalty.
One such woman, Linda, who spends $325 on a cut with Arsen Gurgov at the Louis Licari salon on Fifth Avenue, insists the indulgence is worth every penny.
The home care nurse, 29, told the New York Post: ‘It’s my wig. I can’t just trust any woman with it. I can’t afford to get it wrong.

I don’t think I’m extravagant in my day-to-day life, but if people consider my sheitel maintenance extravagant, so be it. My wig is not something I would try to save money on.

Indeed, a sheitel is an investment. Typically purchased by a husband’s family for the first time, they retail for upwards of $500. The best quality wigs, usually made from European hair, can cost in excess of $6,000.
Linda, who has had five hairpieces since marrying nine years ago, added: ‘It’s definitely more expensive, but it’s worth it.’

‘If people consider my sheitel maintenance extravagant, so be it. My wig is not something I’d try to save money on’

Mr Gurgov says demand for his services from orthodox Jewish clients has been particularly high of late, due to Rosh Hashanah, which begins today.
“Everyone does their hair before Rosh Hashanah,’ he said. ‘Even if they neglect their hair all year, this is the time.”
At celebrity stylist Orlando Pita’s trendy Meatpacking District salon, Orlo, around 25 per cent of the clientele are orthodox Jewish women, writer Doree Lewak reports.

But a wig-maintenance session with the famed cutter comes at an extortionate $1,600 – twice the price of his regular haircuts.
An employee at the salon told her: ‘These women don’t want to admit they’re spending this much on a haircut.’
But stylist Mark Garrison, who says increasing numbers of orthodox Jewish women are paying in excess of $1,000 for two-to-three-hour sessions at his Upper East Side salon, admits the pressure to get a wig cut right is higher than with regular hair.

I’ve always wanted to take my time to get it right,’ he said. ‘It doesn’t grow back. You don’t have margin for error here. You don’t just bang these things out.”

-Arsen Gurgov, nyc hair stylist.
